Joint Prime Minister’s Office-Energy Ministry Announcement: An Important Step in Realizing the IMEC Vision led by the US
At the diplomatic meeting held today (Sunday, 4 May 2025), between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, with the participation of Energy Minister Eli Cohen and Cypriot Energy, Commerce and Industry Minister Giorgos Papanastasiou, it was agreed that the electricity cable (IMEC project) linking the two countries – and, in the future, linking Cyprus with Europe – would be signed this year.
Laying the electricity cable is significantly important for energy security given that Israel is considered an ‘island nation’ in the energy sense and since the infrastructure corridor will constitute a link between the East and the West, between India and Europe.
Also discussed was an agreement on the division of the ‘Aphrodite-Yishai’ gas field between the two countries, the negotiations for which are in an advanced stage, and which is expected to be signed in the next two months.
