Israel welcomes Security Council resolution 2790, ending UNIFIL's mandate. UNIFIL soldiers to withdraw from Lebanon by 2027. US support crucial for achieving

Israel welcomes the adoption of Security Council resolution 2790 of 28 August 2025, ending UNIFIL’s mandate. In accordance with Israel’s position, UNIFIL’s mandate was renewed for the last time. It will end definitively in December 2026, and during 2027 UNIFIL soldiers will withdraw from Lebanon.
Over the years, UNIFIL has completely failed to prevent Hezbollah’s ongoing military build-up within its area of operations. Likewise, UNIFIL’s reports to the Security Council did not reflect the reality on the ground and the extent of Hezbollah’s build-up and created a false appearance of stability.
Therefore, the Security Council’s decision to carry out an orderly and gradual withdrawal of the force is the correct decision, which will contribute to regional stability. The Government of Lebanon bears the responsibility to seize this historic opportunity and fully exercise its sovereignty.
Israel appreciates the position of the United States and, in particular, that of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whose support was instrumental in achieving this outcome. U.S. engagement in fostering a more secure regional environment is welcome and important.
Recent developments in Lebanon are encouraging, and Israel will continue to ensure that these achievements are preserved and that the security of our northern residents remains assured. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will maintain close dialogue with relevant international actors to ensure that the Security Council’s decision to end the UNIFIL mission is fully and properly implemented.
