IAI Converts Boeing 777 into Freighter, a World First
IAI makes history with world's first Boeing 777 freighter conversion, boosting cargo capacity and efficiency. Launch customer AerCap, operator Kalitta Air.
Jerusalem, 1 September, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) achieved a global first by converting a boeing 777-300ER passenger jet into a freighter, receiving the world’s first Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) from both the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority.
The newly certified B777-300ERSF can carry up to 100 tons, significantly boosting cargo capacity and Efficiency for International Shipping. AerCap, a leading global aircraft leasing company, is the launch customer, commissioning the first conversion, while U.S.-based cargo airline Kalitta Air will be the launch operator, flying the aircraft commercially.
IAI CEO Boaz Levy called the milestone “a breakthrough in aviation” and highlighted the company’s pioneering role in passenger-to-freighter conversions.
