Jerusalem, 21 May, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, is the largest city in the country, and on Jerusalem Day, its number of residents is estimated at 1,046,300. This is according to the data released by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics ahead of the Jerusalem Day holiday that begins Sunday night.

At the end of 2024, 56.9% of Jerusalem’s residents were Jews and others, 38.2% Arabs and 4.9% foreigners. As of the end of 2023, about 29.5% of all city residents were Haredi, about half of the Jews and others in the city (51%).

During 2024, the population of Jerusalem increased by approximately 17,900 residents. Approximately 21,500 people were added to the population as a result of natural increase and another approximately 1,500 people as a result of international migration. 7,800 people were subtracted from the city’s population as a result of a negative internal migration balance (the number of people leaving Jerusalem for other localities in Israel is higher than the number moving to Jerusalem). In addition, the foreign population in Jerusalem increased by 3,700 compared to 2023.

The total fertility rate (the average number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime) in Jerusalem was 3.70 children per woman, higher than the national rate (2.87). Among Jewish and other women, the rate was 4.40 (compared to the national rate of 2.95), while among Arab women, it was 2.81 (compared to the national rate of 2.60).

The average maternal age at first birth in Jerusalem is about two years and ten months lower than the national average – 24.6 compared to 27.4, respectively.

A Jerusalem household has an average of 3.79 people, compared to a national average of 3.18 people.

The percentage of labor force participants in Jerusalem in 2024 was 51.7%, compared to the national average of 62.7%.

70.9% of employed Jerusalem residents work in their locality of residence.
